Thoracic Trauma


Abstract
Clinical observations were performed on 130 cases of thoracic trauma, experienced at the Department of Surgery, Chung-Ang University, Sung-Sim Hospital, during the past 8 years period from June, 1975 to June, 1983.
1) The ratio of male to female was 3.3 : 1 and age from 21 to 50 occupied 70% of the patients.
2) The most common cause of thoracic trauma was traffic accident(54%) and the most common injury was rib fracture(56%).
3. The common associated injuries were cerebral contusion(13%), clavicle fracture and spine sprain.
4) The common method of surgical treatment were closed thoracotomy(14%), thoracentesis and open thoracotomy(2.3%).
5) The overall mortality was 2.3%.
